The Plants for Human Health Institute building, located at 600 Laureate Way, is part of the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC. One of the three original buildings completed at the time of the campus dedication in 2008, the PHHI building sits on the corner or Laureate Way and North Research Campus Drive. With 100,000 square feet, N.C. State operates 80 percent of the building, while the Appalachian State University Human Performance Laboratory, the UNC Greensboro Center for Translational Biomedical Research, NC Central University and the UNC Charlotte Bioinformatics program occupy the remainder of the space. Scientific Instruments

Our mission at PHHI is to lead the discovery and delivery of innovative plant-based solutions to advance human health. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with fellow faculty to further leverage our available resources — in expertise and instrumentation. Please review our Advanced Instrumentation and Research Capacity (PDF), listed by lab.

Specialized scientific instrumentation is costly to purchase and maintain. Making these resources available to fellow researchers is beneficial to the entire scientific community. Established rates cover the cost of lab personnel to perform sample runs and analysis when the equipment is not in use by the designated lab. Refer to each lab’s Instrument Information Sheet for the specifications of each instrument, as well as established rates for industry and academic services.

Greenhouse and Growth Chambers

PHHI greenhouse complex

The Plants for Human Health Institute oversees controlled environment spaces for plant growth and research. The greenhouses, located a half-mile from the PHHI building, offer more than 7,000 square feet of growing space. Eight growth chambers, each approximately 100 square feet, are located in the PHHI building.

PHHI faculty have priority use of the greenhouse and growth chambers. Additional available space is available for lease to N.C. State faculty, campus partners or other industry. A PHHI staff member oversees daily management of the greenhouse and growth chamber facilities and handles space requests. All questions about PHHI growing facilities should be directed to the Greenhouse Operations Technician, Jack Lotito, 704-250-5487.
