Grants Coordinator

The Institute is looking for a proactive and energetic Grants Coordinator that can lead collaborative proposal development, compile and prepare processes for the Institute, which strategically enhance the submissions of sponsored programs, and the sustainability and success of collaborative project initiatives that support sponsored program research areas.

The position will coordinate with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Research Office, develop proposal development and implement tools and best practices in service to PHHI faculty. The position will work with faculty teams to prepare successful, large-scale, multidisciplinary research and/or extension proposals and graduate fellowship grants. The position will work with other collaborating partner institutions and their research offices, and assist with Federal, State and University reporting on grants and research activities.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

Facilitation of large-scale, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional proposals in excess of $500,000 as well as NSF CAREER proposals and proposals from junior faculty who have not yet received competitive funding. Project scheduling and management;
Strategic planning (mission, goals, objectives, strategies, logic modeling);
Proposal writing (non-technical sections), consolidating, reviewing, editing, formatting, graphics;
Budgets, subcontracts, and cost-sharing;
In coordination with other staff, administrative and logistics support (workshops, Curriculum vitae (CVs), Contracts & Proposals (C&Ps), Conflict of Interest (COIs), forms, data tables);
In partnership PHHI Faculty, coordinate planning of agency site visits planning and coordination;
Main contact person for communicating research and extension funding opportunities to faculty & clients;
Stay current on grant programs (journals, internet, traveling to academic institutions, etc.).

Postdoctoral Research Scholar

Dr. Iorizzo’s lab at NCSU is looking for a highly motivated post-doc that will focus on understanding the molecular mechanism involved in the regulation and biosynthesis of secondary metabolite accumulation in plants including anthocyanin, carotenoids, and organic acids. The ultimate goal is to identify genes and candidate mutations controlling secondary metabolites accumulation that can be targeted for DNA-assisted breeding either through marker-assisted breeding or gene-editing techniques. The candidate must have a strong motivation and proficiency for publications.

The position will work as part of a laboratory team, will interact closely with collaborating laboratories, and must be able to coordinate activities and reports within a diverse team of individuals. The position will be responsible for writing publications and preparing presentations, contributing with the preparation of technical reports, as well as contributing on grant proposal development to support research funding initiatives. The position will assist/participate in PHHI and University-sponsored programs. The position will also assist in the training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Crops of interest in this project will include blueberry and carrots.

Required education and experience:

Ph.D. in Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, or a degree in biological science with demonstrated experience in molecular biology, and biochemistry.
Strong background in basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA, RNA extraction, PCR), plant transformation, interaction assays (e.g. yeast one hybrid), Chip-Seq, enzyme assays;
Experience to use next-generation sequencing or sanger sequencing data including short and long reads technology, comparative genome, or analysis to identify candidate genes/mutations;
Proficiency to publish findings in well-recognized peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with preparation of library for DNA/RNA sequencing will be preferred;
Experience with multiomic biology (single cell or whole genome genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics) and synthetic biology is a plus.
Ability to manage more than one project in a rapid and smooth manner while being able to interact and communicate with research personnel from diverse disciplines.

Temp Research Assistant

The candidate will participate in ongoing projects involving investigations on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying some human pathological conditions. The lab uses a wide range of experimental approaches including cell biology, molecular and biochemical techniques, histology, and fluorescence microscopy with various model systems including cell and tissue cultures to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying human diseases, including neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism and Rett syndrome, and pollution related diseases. In particular, under the direction of the Principal Investigators, the Temp Technician will support and assist the lab personnel in conducting ongoing projects, particularly those that involve animal tissue processing and microscopy.

Selected individual will be responsible for the daily care of research animals including animal observation, handling and restraint, and treatments. Duties and responsibilities include performing experiments with live mice, tissue isolation and processing, tissue sectioning, histochemical and immunolabeling, cell culture, and microscopy.

Weekend work required.

Temp Research Technician

Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, the Temp Technician will support and assist the lab personnel in conducting ongoing projects, particularly those that involve investigations on pathological processes affecting human tissues (e.g. skin, lung, gut, etc.) exposed to environmental stressors including UV radiation, cigarette smoke, ozone, particulate matter and diesel exhaust pollution.

The core functions of this role are to assist in the daily operation of our team. These functions include accurately performing:

Basic molecular biology techniques such as western blotting, immunoprecipitation, quantitative PCR and ELISA assay
Histological procedures including human and/or animal tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, maintaining accurate tissue and slide records
Computerized data entry of all work performed and generates reports as required

Weekend and holiday work required occasionally.

Postdoctoral Research Scholar

A postdoctoral position in nutritional biochemistry is available to join the laboratory of Dr. Eroglu, from the Plants for Human Health Institute, from the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, North Carolina State University.

The successful candidate in this position will focus on the effects of the dietary bioactive compounds on metagenome, proteomics, and metabolomics. Initially, studies will utilize cell-based assays on the ability of phytochemicals to modulate transcription factors. Subsequently, the combination of in vitro, animal, clinical, and epidemiologic studies will be employed to understand the role of phytochemicals in maintaining optimal human health.

The candidate will train and supervise students and visiting scholars. The candidate will interface with multidisciplinary scientists from several departments at NCSU, the Plants for Human Health Institute in Kannapolis, NC, private industries, national and internationally recognized institutions involved in the area of biochemistry, plant science, regenerative medicine, and nutrition.

Required education and experience:

Ph.D. in biochemistry or molecular and cellular immunology, or a related field, with a strong foundation in nutrition and inflammation.
Must be able to study the ability of diet to affect the flow of genetic information using in vitro systems and in vivo animal models.
Gene expression techniques, molecular biology, and protein purification and analysis are critical areas of experience.
Experience running biochemical assays, cellular assays, animal husbandry, collecting and analyzing the data with appropriate statistical methods is a must.
